A 20-year-old man who along with an ex-convict was arrested last April for allegedly beating up and robbing a 65-year-old masseur, has signed a plea agreement with the government.

Joshua Basaliso and counsel entered a plea bargain. Under the agreement, he will plead guilty to assault and battery.

As part of the agreement, the Office of the Attorney General will recommend the dismissal of the remaining charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and disturbing the peace.

Superior Court associate judge David Wiseman set the change of plea hearing for Oct. 31, 2011 at 1:30pm.

Under the plea agreement, the OAG will recommend a 90-day jail term, with credit for time already served in jail.

The victim, Guoxi Liang, a Chinese national, sustained multiple injuries in the face and head. His right eye had massive swelling.

Detective Catherine B. Pangelinan stated in her report that a witness heard ex-convict Nestor Taitano suggesting to Basaliso that they beat up the “Chinese guy” because he had a lot of money.

Taitano and Basaliso then walked to Liang, who was sitting outside his house next to Sunrise Store in San Antonio, and allegedly beat him up. Taitano then allegedly took the victim’s wallet containing less than $100 cash.
