SCS keeps junior high title
[/I][/B] Saipan Community School retained the junior high division championship in the 18th SSC All Schools Swimming Championships after earning 109 points in the weekend competition at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.
SCS, which defeated Whispering Palms in last year’s battle for the junior high top spot, made it back-to-back after getting a lift from CNMI age group record-holder Kento Akumaru , Ryu Tanzawa, Quintin Ramsey, and Ryosei Toda.
Ten-year-old Akimaru topped the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke races to give the SCS Tsunamis 18 points. Toda and Ramsey contributed 16 markers each for SCS as the former had first place finish in the 10 to 14 100m breaststroke and runner-up in the 50m freestyle and the latter took first place in the 400m freestyle and second in the 200m individual medley. Tanzawa handed the Tsunamis 14 markers off his first-place swim in the 12 to 14 100m freestyle and fourth place finish in the 10 to 14 50m freestyle.
Points were given to swimmers based on how they finished the different events. Nine points were awarded to the top finisher in the individual race, seven to second, six to third, five to fourth, four to fifth, three to six, two to seventh, and one to eighth.
SCS also earned points in relay races, which gave 18 points to the winners, 14 to the runners-up, and 12 to the third placers. Toda, Akimaru, Ramsey, and Tanzawa gained 18 markers for winning the 200m medley relay. Then in the mixed 200m freestyle relay, Dylan Ackerman, Arthur Sodheim, Isaac Jang, and Nael Lim finished second to win 14 points for SCS. Lim gave the Tsunamis seven more points for placing second behind Toda in the 10 to 13 100m breaststroke.
SCS won convincingly over Grace Christian Academy, which scored only 43 points. Last year’s runner-up Whispering Palms dropped to third with its 39 markers, while 2008 champion Saipan International School came in fourth with its 35 points. Hopwood Junior High School was ranked fifth with 16 points.
Trophies will be awarded to the winning schools, while the organizing Saipan Swim Club will also recognize the Top 3 finishers in each races.
Meanwhile, SSC would like to thank the management and staff of the Kan Pacific pool, Northern Mariana Swim Federation, and all the participating schools.
