Woman gets 72-hour sentence for assault

A female mixed martial arts fighter who reportedly took the gun of her police officer-boyfriend during a fight at their residence in As Perdido pleaded guilty yesterday to the charge of assault and battery.
Superior Court associate judge David A. Wiseman accepted Jenypy Naim Sambile’s guilty plea and sentenced her to a year in prison, all suspended except for 72 hours.
The 25-year-old Sambile given credit for the 24 hours she had already served in jail. She will begin serving the rest of her sentence on Nov. 12, 2011, and will be released on Nov. 14.
After completing the prison term, Sambile will be placed on one year of probation, during which she will be barred from drinking alcohol. She was also required to pay a $100 fine, $25 court assessment, plus probation fee and attend an alcohol and drug counseling and anger management courses.
The Office of the Attorney General had charged Sambile with assault and battery, and disturbing the peace. She copped a plea for assault and battery in exchange for the dismissal of the remaining charge.
The case arose from an incident on July 31, 2011, when Sambile and her boyfriend, police officer Josef Deleon Guerrero, had a fight, during which they struggled for possession of Deleon Guerrero’s .9mm pistol. He managed to make her drop the gun by choking her.
Sambile, a government employee known as “So-High La” in MMA events, was arrested on Sept. 6 after investigators found her to be the aggressor in the incident.
