Rep. Tony Sablan (R-Saipan) and three other House members are seeking a waiver of Department of Public Lands fees for private property owners, businesses and organizations that want to clean up or maintain public land surrounding their private property.

House Bill 17-231, pre-filed on Friday, seeks to allow DPL to grant revocable consent without fees to individuals, businesses, or organizations to construct and maintain certain structures on public property such as driveways and sidewalks.

Sablan said it is imperative that people, businesses, and organizations help maintain and beautify the CNMI to help promote the islands as a clean and health-conscious tourism destination.

But while these people, businesses and groups want to do so, they are prevented by DPL fees they are required to pay. HB 17-231 seeks a waiver of DPL fees only to those that build or maintain certain structures on public property considered to be “eye sore” for tourists and residents.
