The Sonics and Rollers Basketball Club’s Fast 12 squad moved on to the second round of the Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball Club’s U19 division playoffs Wednesday at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.

Top ranked Sonics eliminated defending champion New Fresh Market Ol’Aces, 60-41, in the curtain raiser, while Fast 12 overwhelmed RBC Ray Basa-Kagman Rollers, 78-39, in the nightcap.

The U19 playoffs continue tonight in Gualo Rai with RBC-DYS Rollers taking on NMC Proa at 4:45pm followed by the CK Blazers against Hi-5 at 6pm.

The Sonics managed an early 13-12 edge after the opening eight minutes thanks largely to the six points of Bryl Alegre.

Sonics’ Melvin Cadiang then delivered five markers late in the second quarter to give his team two-point spread, 24-22, at halftime.

Sahj Hossain mustered eight points in the first half to keep Ol’Aces in contention.

The Sonics made some defensive adjustments after the break and held Ol’Aces’ explosive offense to just eight markers in the third period.

On the other end, Cadiang drained a couple of 3-pointers in the third quarter to lift his team to a double-digit lead, 40-30, heading into the fourth and final quarter.

The Sonics never looked back and pressed on to the one-sided victory. Adrian Palacios came off the bench and delivered a pair of treys for 10 points in the payoff period.

Cadiang led the Sonics with 13 points, while Hossain finished with 19 in the loss.

In the second game, Lester Vertudez found his mark early with six points as Fast 12 doubled up on Kagman, 14-7, after the first quarter.

Fast 12’s defense held Kagman’s offense to single digits again in the second quarter as the team amassed a daunting 36-16 lead at the pause.

Fast 12’s Herbert Manahan scored nine points in the period.

Then after Kagman’s offense stalled again in the third quarter, the outcome of the match became apparent; Fast 12 led it 53-24, heading into the last quarter.

Fast 12 sent in the reserves early and had no trouble wearing out the six-man Kagman crew in the final canto.

Five different players chipped in offensively for Fast 12 in the period.

Fast 12’s Manahan and Mike Bondoc combined for 25 points to lead Fast 12 to victory, while Kagman’s Daymark Teregeyo fired 14 in the loss.
