Community Briefs – October 5, 2011

The Division of Environment Quality has red-flagged the Bird Island beach and is advising the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of this location for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.

DEQ said that samples collected from the site had excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci) that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water. Water samples were taken from 12 locations on Saipan this week. For more information, contact DEQ at 664-8500. Mid-progress report for all Marianas High School students will be released on Thursday, Oct, 6, from 4pm to 6pm. Student will be dismissed on this day at 1pm. All parents must pick up the mid-progress reports from each student’s teacher only at the time assigned. There will also be a lot of information sharing about accreditation and changes on the campus.[B][I] (PR)[/I][/B] [B]Chamber meeting today[/B]

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce will hold its October general membership luncheon meeting today, Oct. 5, 2011, at the Pacific Islands Club. Luncheon will begin at 11:30am and the general membership meeting will begin at noon.

The SCC October meeting keynote speaker will be Bob Jones, decades an investor on Saipan, in Guam and throughout Micronesia. Jones is president and CEO for many local businesses, including Triple J Enterprises and his new venture, Sandy Beach Homes. Also on the meeting’s agenda will be a wrap-up presentation on the recently concluded USCIS educational presentations and the just released SCC 2011 Survey of Wages, Salaries and Benefits among Jobs and Organizations in the CNMI.

The lunch will cost $15 for members, $20 for guests and non-members. [B][I](SCC)[/I][/B] [B]Kagman High sets Open House night[/B]

Kagman High School is inviting all KHS parents to attend our 2nd Annual Open House night on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 5pm to 7pm. This year is an accreditation year and we need parent participation more than ever! The event begins on time so don’t be late! Parent orientation is in the cafeteria and starts at 5pm. There will be free refreshments and free raffles at the end of this event. You must be present to win! Students will earn class points if their parent participates. Class points will be added to the coveted Class of the Year title. Students can also earn extra credit in their classes for getting their parents to participate. [B][I](PR) [/I][/B]
