Heavy rains flood Aging Office
The Office on Aging is seeking the help of the Department of Public Works to prevent the possible collapse of the office’s walls due to heavy downpour on the island the past few days.
“I need DPW to reroute the water. You look at the wall and it’s buckling already,” Aging director Rose Mondala told reporters yesterday.
Mondala said she and staffer David Celis were at the office Monday night to make sure that the office doesn’t get inundated.
“Every time there’s rain, we have to come here [Aging Office] so we don’t get flooded,” explained Mondala. “Before, I used to do it alone. Now David helps me.”
According to Mondala, Monday’s downpour resulted in water “coming so hard it was like Niagara Falls.”
She said the Aging Office already spent $400 for water blasting services due to the heavy rains, which also caused about a half-foot flood at the front and back sides of their parking lot.
Mondala disclosed that this problem started two years ago. “We didn’t think it’s going to be like this,” she added.
The Aging director said she plans to meet with DPW Secretary Martin Sablan to request his agency’s assistance and show him a picture of Monday night’s misfortune.
“I already saw him a week ago and told him about our situation in passing,” added Mondala.
