About 200 employees of the Northern Marianas College can now heave a sigh of relief after the institution reinstated their 80-hour biweekly work schedule starting Saturday, the beginning of the new fiscal year.

Student Services dean Leo Pangelinan confirmed with Saipan Tribune yesterday that, unless the college management makes further adjustments, the 80-hour work schedule will be maintained until the end of fiscal year 2012.

“Friday was the last day of the work-hour reduction and until NMC decides to do it again, we will keep the 80-hour schedule until end of the fiscal year,” said Pangelinan.

NMC was appropriated a $5.2 million budget this fiscal year. The bulk of the amount will be used to pay for personnel salaries and wages for the next 12-month period, from Oct. 1, 2011, to Sept. 30, 2012.

On Friday, the Board of Regents and NMC president Dr. Sharon Hart praised the Legislature’s decision to increase the college’s budget, allowing it to comply with federal rules governing financial grants. Hart said the approved budget saved NMC from losing millions of grants for students.

Pangelinan said that Roger Madriaga, NMC’s chief financial officer, will complete a comprehensive budget analysis in which possible changes can be made on the existing salaries of NMC personnel.

NMC employs about 200 people, including instructors, non-instructional faculty, staff, and administrators.

NMC began implementing austerity Fridays in July due to a series of budget cuts. From the original budget of $4.4 million, the amount was cut to $4.1 million.
