Hopwood dispels rumor of missing student
Hopwood Junior High School principal Jonas Barcinas dispelled rumors yesterday that one of his students has been missing since the weekend, saying the information was a result of some misunderstanding and miscommunication at school.
Barcinas, who was at the Public School System’s “meet and greet” with newly elected PTSA officers yesterday, said that he also received some calls inquiring whether Hopwood is missing one of its student.
He said that all 1,280 students of his school has been accounted for and are secure inside the campus.
Barcinas said that the school has been strictly limiting the entry of people inside the campus for security reasons. Some parents who insisted on entering the campus yesterday were informed by the school’s security aide that the tight security measures at the gate were due to an “Amber Alert.”
Because of the panic and confusion created by the language used by the security aid, Barcinas said the school reminded the security employee to avoid using the language to prevent the same incident from happening.
Barcinas urged parents to follow the school’s proper security protocols.
The Amber Alert Program, named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, is a voluntary partnership between law enforcement agencies, broadcasters, and transportation agencies to activate an urgent bulletin in serious child-abduction cases. It works by instantly galvanizing the entire community to assist in the search for and safe recovery of children.
