Cabalen, Namfrel keep streaks

Cabalen/Noni and Namfrel/Proa are still in a zone after stretching their respective winning streaks in the UFO Inter-Organization Basketball Friendship League 2011 Bud Cup last Sunday at the TSL Sports Complex.

Namfrel/Proa played in the first game and routed Bayani/Mobil, 108-86, to improve to a 6-0 win-loss card and move two wins away from sweeping the round-robin regular season. Mobil finished the elimination round with a 4-4 record and will have to wait for the results of the remaining matches this week to determine its place in the seven-team playoffs.

In the second game, Cabalen downed Cavite, 98-83, to extend its winning run to four. Cabalen now has a 6-1 record for a share of the second spot with the UPAA/Docomo Hoopaholics, while Cavite completed the regular season with a 2-6 slate and is ranked seventh in the nine-team field.

Both Cabalen and Namfrel managed to break away from their opponents behind their impressive 3-point shooting. Namfrel drilled 11 treys against Mobil’s two, while Cabalen connected on 13 triples versus Cavite’s eight.

Mobil lost by a big margin despite threatening Namfrel in the third quarter. Namfrel was on top by 11 at the break, 40-29, when Mobil scored 35 points in the third canto to move within five, 64-69, with still a full quarter to go.

However, Namfrel regained its form in the final canto and almost doubled Mobil’s output in the payoff canto en route to the 23-point win. Namfrel outgunned Mobil in the fourth stanza, 39-21, behind the 10 points of Dan Barcinas. Jack Lizama and Joshua Sablan also contributed in the fourth quarter breakaway, as they combined for 15 markers.

Pete Iguel top-scored in Namfrel/Proa’s sixth win with his 24 markers, while Barcinas chipped in 23. Sablan and Lizama had 18 apiece, while Quincy Johnson and Gino Libuw logged 11 each.

In the second game, Bon Tamayo sizzled for 25 points with 18 of them coming from downtown. He was scoreless in the first period, which ended with Cavite on top, 22-17.

Then in the second half, Tamayo showed up and hit three triples. However, Cavite also nailed three treys, two from Freddie Pelisamen and one from Pando Muleta, to stay on top at halftime, 45-41.

In the third quarter, Tamayo continued his hot outside shooting, firing three more triples and scoring 14 to lift Cabalen to a 70-63 advantage. Cabalen hung in there in the fourth period, canning four more triples to survive Pelisamen’s 35-point explosion.
