Back-to-back for Soriano
Jerry Soriano was on a roll in the VFW Post 3457 9-Ball Tournament, ruling the first two weekly qualifiers held at the Garapan bar.
In the first Saturday of the month, Soriano prevailed against Chester Cuento in the finals and then defeated Eugene Borja the following week for back-to-back victories. VFW Post 3457 holds weekly competitions with winners advancing to the “Battle of Champions” that will take place after 15 qualifying weeks.
In the Sept. 3 qualifier, Soriano went unbeaten. His first victim was Joseph Achas and then he topped Mike Pangelinan to advance to the quarterfinals. Soriano won anew in the Round of 8 and then downed Cuento in the semis to book the first finals ticket.
Cuento dropped to the loser’s bracket and had to triumph over Simon Kapileo to earn a rematch against Soriano. Kapileo settled for third place and $20 cash prize. Soriano and Cuento went home with $50 and $30, respectively.
Soriano added $45 to his pocket when he was victorious in the Sept. 10 qualifier. This time, he moved out of the loser’s bracket to top the nine-player qualifier.
Soriano started his bid for back-to-back wins with a victory over Didi in the first round. Next up for Soriano was Borja, who pulled off an upset to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Borja extended his streak after defeating Jimmy Wang. Both Wang and Soriano fell to the loser’s bracket with the latter winning over Jorge Pangelinan and the former to arrange a rematch against Borja.
In the finals, Soriano avenged his earlier loss to Borja to notch his second straight win of the month.
