Shirley’s A takes women’s futsal crown
Shirley’s A clinched the women’s championship in the 2011 Saipan Soccer School Futsal League despite losing to sister team Shirley’s B, 1-4, on Monday night at the TSL Sports Complex.
Thanks to Red Team’s 3-3 draw against IT&E Awesome in the earlier game, Shirley’s A didn’t have to win its last game of the season to take the women’s tiara.
Coming into Monday night’s games, Shirley’s A held an 11-2-0-win-loss-draw record, while IT&E had a 10-2-1 mark. Had IT&E Awesome won over Red Team, the former could have improved its record to 11-2-1 and gained 35 points in the double-round robin competition, two points ahead of Shirley’s A, which ended the season with 33 points and an 11-3-0 card after bowing to Shirley’s B. IT&E Awesome wrapped up the competition with 32 markers and a 10-2-2 slate.
IT&E Awesome was in danger of dropping an important match when Red Team took a 2-1 advantage at the break. Temary Gramlich and Zoe Jewell scored one goal apiece for Red Team, whole Nola Hix made IT&E Awesome’s lone goal in the opening frame.

In the second women’s game, Shirley’s A played with no pressure, as the championship was already in the bag after the IT&E Awesome-Red Team draw.
Only Maria Iriarte hit a goal for Shirley’s A, while Gigi Zapanta, Alexa Vergara, Mikky Vargas, and Janeeka Atalig recorded one goal each for Shirley’s B. Shirley’s B finished third in the eight-team field with its 9-5-0 record, one win ahead of Red Team (8-5-1).
