CNMI Scholarship Office has new administrator
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has appointed a new chief executive officer for the CNMI Scholarship Office after the resignation of its erstwhile administrator.
Fitial appointed Jacqueline Che to serve as the new scholarship administrator, replacing Merissa S. Rasa.
Fitial said the appointment is effective Aug. 9.
Press secretary Angel A. Demapan confirmed with Saipan Tribune that Rasa resigned on Aug. 3 to pursue another employment opportunity.
“Due to her decision to accept another employment opportunity, Ms. Merissa S. Rasa tendered her resignation last month and her last day on the job was Aug. 3, 2011,” said Demapan.
He said that Fitial immediately named Che to the position to ensure that the operation of the Scholarship Office swiftly transitions in line with the beginning of the fall semester.
The NMI Scholarship Office functions under the Office of the Governor. Its primary mission is to provide financial assistance to eligible CNMI students pursuing postsecondary education.
Unlike the Saipan Higher Educational Financial Assistance program, which is funded by revenue collected from poker machines and licenses, the CNMI Scholarship Office gets direct government appropriation.
From an annual budget of $4 million in fiscal year 2006, this office’s allocation has declined to just $2 million in 2011. Of the $2 million, almost half goes to some 50 students under the Honors Scholarship Program, each of whom receives up to $15,000 a year.
