81 riders join Mieko fundraiser
The 2011 Mieko Carey Bike Race Fundraiser lured 81 riders with familiar faces crossing the finish line first at Banzai Cliff last Sunday.
In the MTB long course, Butch Sublemente completed the four laps of Banzai loop in less than an hour to rule the men’s division. Susan Marchitti won the women’s category. Organizers did not keep track of the times of the finishers and winners were decided based on who made it to Banzai Cliff first. Rounding out the Top 3 in the men’s division were Anthony Aguilar and Ken Pierson.
The MTB long course had Sublemente and company leaving Banzai Cliff, heading to the Last Command Post, passing the dumpsite, pedaling down Cowtown Raceway, going to the Banzai trail, and returning to the starting line.
The MTB short course had the same route, but riders only did two laps. Joanne Salazar and Roxy Lamar finished in the Top 2 in the women’s division, while Bernard Laborse reigned supreme in the men’s category, beating Ronald Lanuza and Ricky Suba.
In the road race, Lewie Tenorio placed first ahead of Nap Dizon and Willy Barbo. Road bike participants also began the race at Banzai Cliff and cruised along Suicide Cliff, Bird Island, and Grotto before returning to Banzai. In the women’s division, Esther Ada took the top spot, beating Juanita Fajardo and Sheryl Camacho.
Sixty-eight bikers joined the road and MTB races, while a mini race for 12 youth riders took place after the adults event. The bike race for kids was held around the pavilion at Banzai.
The weekend race aimed to raise funds for Carey’s trip to the 2011 XTERRA World Championship in Maui, Hawaii next month.
“I would like to thank all participants for their support. Thank you also to the sponsors, volunteers, and parents of the youth bikers. I will do my best in representing the CNMI in Maui,” Carey said.
The fundraiser was supported by Salomon, Suunto, Zoot, IT&E, Gold’s Gym, Brabu Pharmacy, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Triple J Wholesale, Bike Pro, Ride NMI, Suzy Kindel, Randy Steele, and Kanae Quinn.
