MBI inches closer to Blue Haus finals
Micronesian Brokers, Inc. defeated Sherwin Williams, 71-66, during a playoff game last Friday at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court to move a win away from clinching a finals seat in the Blue Haus Invitational Basketball League.
MBI, which ruled the A Bracket of the inaugural league, was scheduled to face C Bracket champion Cell Pro last night and another victory will put the former in the championship round. Sherwin Williams is not out of the competition yet, as the three-team playoff round is a double-elimination affair.
The MBI-Sherwin Williams duel was a close one with neither team leading by double digits. MBI worked an early 19-16 lead in the opening 10 minutes behind Marvin Achas’ six points.
Then MBI’s Leo Galarse came off the bench and fired 12 markers in the second quarter to keep his team in the driver’s seat at halftime, 35-32. Sherwin Williams stayed in the game after Jun Tabora and Dado Vistal combined for 20 points in the first half.
MBI nailed a couple of three-pointers at the start of the third quarter to stretch the lead to eight, 55-47, heading into the final period. Galares added nine more points in the third quarter.
Then in the payoff period, MBI’s defense held Tabora to just five points to secure the victory.
Galares led the field with 28 points, while Tabora finished with 22 on the short end.
