The Chinese Association of Saipan featured one of the world’s most ancient cultures with the Chinese Culture Night held Thursday at the Paseo de Marianas, showcasing China’s culture and art through dance, music, and food.

The event attracted hundreds of spectators, who were captivated by the grace and skill of the evening’s roster of performers that included local and Beijing talents.

“China is a very, very old country and civilization and it has a lot to share with everyone,” said Chinese Association of Saipan president Jerry Tan as the program kicked off with the traditional lion dance, believed to ward off evil and bring good luck.

Thursday night’s presentation included a song number from 4- to 10-year-old students of the Chinese Education Center, violin performances by the talents of the Do Re Mi School of Music, a fan dance by Brilliant Star Montessori School’s Mae Demapan, rainbow dance by Chinese teachers, Tai Chi demonstration, noodle making demonstration by Wang Jing Jing, and traditional Chinese instrument presentation by Teng Li Tong and Rose Chan.

The crowd was in raptures when the “Biàn Lian” or “Face-Changing” performers from Beijing took center stage, entertaining the crowd with their vibrant, colorful masks that changed swiftly several times during their act. Another attraction was the “Gong Fu Chá” show based on the tea preparation.

“Saipan is very lucky to have the chance to watch the face changing show, which doesn’t come too easily even in China and other parts of the world,” Chinese Association’s Rose Chan told Saipan Tribune. “It was so beautiful and nice and we’re very glad that everybody enjoyed it.”

The cultural celebration also featured various booths that put on display remarkable Chinese artworks from board member Anna Chan’s collection. Tasty dimsum from Canton Restaurant, Gourmet Restaurant, Diamond Restaurant, and Oriental Dumpling House were also made available for just $1 per order.

“I would like to give special recognition to the team that has worked for the last couple of months in putting the event together,” said Tan as he thanked members of the Chinese Association of Saipan and the staff of the Tan Siu Lin Foundation.
