Repairs at Oleai complex near completion
Rehabilitation work at the Oleai Sports Complex is scheduled to finish in October and facilities will be opened a week after completion.
According to both the Northern Marianas Housing Corp. and the Division of Sports and Recreation, the completion date for the repairs of the roofing and the men’s and women’s restrooms at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium is set for Sept. 30, while the rehabilitation of the flooring and men’s locker room and installation of telescopic bleachers are expected to finish by Oct. 1.
“Upon completion of the repairs, we will be opening the following week,” Division of Sports and Recreation director Jojo Attao said in an email to Saipan Tribune.
Attao added the first project that was completed was the fencing of the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield on May 9.
The “Tan Ge” field is used by Public School System for its elementary slow-pitch competition and the high school fast-pitch contest. Saipan Little League Baseball, Inc. also uses the field from February to May.
The Ada Gym hosts a lot of competitions, specifically basketball leagues and when the facility closed in April this year, organizers moved their games to the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.
The Coalition of Private School Sports Association used the Ada Gym for its volleyball games last season and then moved the basketball matches at the TSL Sports Complex. COPSSA’s 2011-2012 volleyball season has started last month and it might use the Ada Gym, if available, anew as venue for its playoff games next month.
The rehabilitation work at the Oleai Sports Complex is made possible through the Community Development Block Grant funding.
According to NMHC’s Zenie Mafnas, the total project cost was $292,428, with $23,425 allotted to the fencing works, $189,096 to the flooring and installation of the telescopic bleachers, and $79,907 for the roofing and rehabilitation of the restrooms.
