WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo recently announced that the government of Guam has been awarded $454,777 in federal financial assistance.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $197,700 to the Guam Housing and Urban Development Renewal Authority (GHURA) for the Service Coordinators in Multifamily Housing program. This program allows multifamily housing owners to assist elderly individuals and individuals with disabilities to obtain needed support services from the community and to enable them to continue living as independently as possible in their homes. The funds will be used to cover Service Coordinators’ administrative expenses, office space, training, and equipment.

The National Park Service awarded $103,630 to the Guam Department of Parks and Recreation for improvements to the Dededo sports complex. The funding will be used to purchase modest bleacher seating for three of four newly constructed baseball fields as well as extending existing dugouts for all four ball fields.

The U.S. Department of Justice awarded $101,389 in federal grant assistance to the Office of the Attorney General. The funds are part of the FY11 John R. Justice program and will be used to support loan repayment for public defenders and prosecutors in Guam who agree to remain employed as public defenders and prosecutors for at least three years.

The Department of Justice has also awarded $52,058 to the Guam Bureau of Statistics and Plans as part of the FY11 Violent Gang and Gun Crime Reduction Program. The funding will be used to help improve the Guam Police Department’s Forensic Science Division’s ability to analyze and identify firearms used in the commission of a violent crime. The funding will also be used to support the Gang Resistance Education And Training (GREAT) program, which educates students against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.

“These federal funds will be used to support various programs administered by the Government of Guam,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. “These grants help to address needs in our community and will enable Government of Guam agencies to implement important programs. I commend the agencies for their efforts to win these grants.”
