Rollers 2 downs Hi-Five

Rollers Basketball Club’s Rollers 2 fended off Hi-Five’s late fourth-quarter rally to pull off a 50-48 win in their U19 game in the 2011 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League last Wednesday at the TSL Sports Complex.

Rollers 2, which improved to a 3-2 record, saved the win after Hi-Five muffed a shot under the basket in the closing seconds of the match and the eventual winner collared the defensive rebound. Hi-Five also holds a 3-2 card.

A good start marked by three 3-pointers gave Rollers 2 a 16-6 lead after eight minutes of play.

Hi-Five roared back in the second stanza, drawing baskets from five different players to pull within a couple of possessions, 21-25. Despite’s Hi-Five’s repeated rallies, Rollers 2 managed to keep the lead at halftime after connecting two more treys in the second period.

Both teams made adjustments after the pause and Hi-Five and Rollers 2 went back and forth in the third period. Hi-Five’s Nikko Salem came off the bench and canned five free throws to move his team within two, 36-38, heading into the final quarter.

Rollers 2 continued to lean on its treys in this match, as it buried two more long balls in the clutch to maintain control. Hi-5 nipped at the Rollers’ heels all game and had a good chance to steal the game in the end, however the latter’s defense prevailed in the last 20 seconds.

Sheen Metran led Rollers 2 with 13 points, while Don Hockett top-scored for Hi-Five with 12.

Meanwhile, two games in the U19 division will be played tonight with the Ol’Aces (3-1) taking on Kagman (1-2) at 5pm and Rollers 1 (1-4) meeting NMC-Proa (1-3) at 6pm.
