Filcag Rollers notched their third straight win after beating AFP/Jets, 71-64, in the second game in UFO Inter-Organization Youth Basketball Docomo Pacific Cup 2011 on Saturday night at the TSL Sports Complex.

The victory also gave the Rollers a share of the lead with MDX, as these two teams hold similar 3-1 records. The Jets dropped to an even 2-2 record after losing steam in the fourth and final quarter.

The Jets were ahead in the majority of the third period and hung on to a 44-43 advantage, entering the fourth canto before they resorted to one-on-one plays and faltered on their bid to move on top of the team standings.

The Jets leaned too much on Sahj Hossain in the fourth period and although the wingman still scored six points, he missed several shots and their offense became predictable, making it easy for the Rollers to neutralize him.

In contrast, the Rollers dug deeper on their bench in the fourth and drew enough contributions from their second stringers. Don Brennan, who was scoreless in the first three periods made all his nine points in the final canto. His five straight points off a triple and a fastbreak layup gave Rollers their biggest lead, 65-54, with less than four minutes left on the clock. Pat Torres chipped in seven, while four other players scored for Rollers in the payoff canto.

The Rollers outgunned the Jets in the fourth period, 28-17—the most margin they had—as the first three quarters were close battles.

Both teams had slow starts with the Rollers leading by only four after 10 minutes of play, 17-13. Leo Galarse top-scored for the Rollers in the opening period with six markers, while James Webb caught fire early making back-to-back triples.

The Rollers and Jets continued to play flat in the second quarter, as they tallied four field goals each and the former hung on to a 27-26 halftime lead.

After failing to score in the second quarter, Webb teamed up with Hossain and Eugene Manglona in the third quarter where the Jets outgunned the Rollers for the first time, 18-16. The trio canned all the Jets baskets in the third period.

However, the Jets could not hang on to the driver’s seat in the fourth period, as Manglona spent most of the minutes at the bench, while Webb scored only when the game was already in the bag for the Rollers. The rest of the Jets players watched Hossain carried most of the cudgels for the team.
