VisMinda/PIAHI wins in masters, too
VisMinda/PIAHI forced a three-way tie for the lead in the UFO Inter-Organization Masters Basketball Docomo Pacific Cup 2011 after beating MDX/Armatech, 92-85, on Thursday night at the TSL Sports Complex.
VisMinda improved to a 3-1 record, the same slate MDX and Cabalen/Wings Travel hold.
Five of the nine VisMinda players scored in double figures for the team’s balance offense and the PIAHI-backed squad took control of the match in the second period en route to its third straight win.
Ray Lizama led VisMinda with 18 markers, Jun Abedes and Jack Palacios chipped in 16 each, Junior Renguul contributed 15, and Leo Ruluked had 10.
Palacios drilled eight of his total points in the opening canto, lifting PIAHI to a 24-20 lead. MDX, which played without spitfire Martine Moreno, managed to stay in the game in the first period behind the three-point shooting of James Abuy and Ferdie Tobias, who had two triples apiece.
However, things started to fall apart for MDX in the second canto when only Tobias scored more than two field goals for Armatech. VisMinda outgunned MDX in the second quarter, 26-14, turning a four-point lead to a big 50-34 halftime advantage. Five VisMinda players tallied at least four points each in the second-quarter breakaway,
VisMinda widened the gap further at the end of the third, 73-52, as the team continued to draw contributions from every player it fielded in the game. MDX failed to make headway in the third despite getting back-to-back triples from Ariel Jinang at the end of that canto, as Abuy went cold anew, while Tobias had only two field goals.
Abuy, who finished with a game-high 21 points, tried to redeem himself in the payoff canto, nailing six triples, but MDX still fell short, as Lizama and Abedes made game-saving baskets for VisMinda.
