Gov. Benigno R. Fitial appointed on Tuesday Charles M. Calvo to serve as a member of the Civil Service Commission to represent Saipan.

Calvo’s appointment requires the advice and consent of the Senate.

If confirmed by the Senate, Calvo will serve the unexpired term of Daniel H. Nielson which will expire on Jan. 9, 2013.

“The Lt. Gov. and I are confident that Mr. Calvo is qualified and will be an asset on this important Commission,” Fitial said in a letter to Senate President Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota).

The governor said copies of Calvo’s resume, statement of financial interest, police clearance, drug test receipt and drug test result will be provided to the Senate as soon as they become available.

“We respectfully request your favorable action on this appointment,” Fitial told the Senate president.

Sen. Frank Cruz (R-Tinian), chairman of the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Governmental Investigations, said yesterday that the panel will schedule public hearings on the governor’s appointees after the fiscal year 2012 budget is passed.

“Right now, we’re prioritizing the budget. We do not want another shutdown, so maybe we will have public hearings when we already have a budget,” Cruz told Saipan Tribune.

The Senate EAGI Committee reviews the nominations and holds public hearings on nominations. It then recommends to the full Senate the confirmation or rejection of any appointee.
