Banzai run hits road tomorrow
The 6th Annual POWERade Banzai Memorial Off-Road Half Marathon and Fun Run kicks off tomorrow.
Registration starts at 5:15am, while the half marathon and fun run will begin at 6am and 7am, respectively. Entrance fee is $20. Students and military personnel will get discounted registration fees and will only pay $10.
Participants in the half marathon race will start at Banzai Cliff and head out to the Last Command Post. They will then turn right along Chalan Pale Arnold up to the coral road leading to the FEBC site, go up to the t-intersection at the top of the road and turn right.
Runners will then race though the coral road behind the Marianas Resort Golf Course and once reaching the 1,000,000-gallon water tank, they will turn left at the paved road. Participants reaching the intersection that leads to the old radar station will then go straight to another coral road that leads to the firing range and the Kalabera Cave.
From Kalabera, runners will negotiate another coral road and proceed to a paved section that leads to the Bird Island overlook. They will then turn right at the intersection going to Grotto, go left toward the Santa Claus Lane that intersects with the Fun Run course along the road to Cowtown.
From this point, runners in both races will go below the Cowtown Raceway for the final mile and a half run back to Banzai Cliff.
The fun run course will also begin at Banzai Cliff, but they will turn left instead of right when they reach the Last Command Post and turn left again to the fork in the road leading to the Cowtown Raceway.
Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel and Rebecca Reed are this year’s defending champions in the half marathon race. Kabiriel timed in at an hour, 39 minutes, and 20 seconds to beat 16 other participants in the 13.1-mile race last year and win the men’s division for the third straight time. Reed topped the women’s division after timing in at 2:03.41.
Running enthusiasts are encouraged to join this weekend’s race, as proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Rollers Basketball Club, whose players will be competing in Guam in November.
