Men join health walk vs prostate cancer
About 50 community members joined in the first health walk organized by the Department of Public Health as part of the Prostate Cancer Awareness Month celebration.
The walk was held yesterday from the Oleai Beach Pavilion to the old Japanese tank across the Quartermaster Road and back.
Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores, Public Health medical director Dr. Dan Lamar, and some members of the Master’s Basketball Association led yesterday’s walkers, composed of mostly men.
“I’m glad that majority of our walkers are men but we were expecting more since we promoted the walk,” Kimberly Sablan, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month committee chair, told Saipan Tribune.
Prior to the walk, Sablan said that the first 30 male walkers will receive a free pedometer and shirt. The next 70 male walkers will receive only a free shirt.
Joanne Ogo, comprehensive cancer control program coordinator, said the first 25 male walkers can also avail of a free health screening.
“We thank you for taking time off of your busy schedule and taking part in this health walk. Our important message to all is for you to get screened,” Ogo told the walkers, adding that screenings are available at the Commonwealth Health Center and in private clinics.
Sablan also thanked all sponsors and donors for the monthlong celebration. They include Foremost/Coca-Cola, Saipan Grand, Coral Ocean Point, Hyatt, Aqua Resort, Mariana Resort, Lollipops, Joeten Superstore, Shirley’s Susupe, Power 99, Gold’s Gym, Pacific Trading, Saipan Shipping, PIC, Benjamin A. Sablan, Reps. Antonio P. Sablan, Ray Basa, and Rafael Demapan, and Sen. Pete Reyes.
Another health walk will be held on Sept. 27 from Garapan Fishing Base to the 13 Fishermen’s Pavilion and back.
