While a little over 3,000 child tax credit checks will be released this week, payroll will be delayed for so-called non-critical government employees because of bond payments.

Only critical service and federal-funded employees will get their paychecks on Thursday or Friday. The rest will get theirs next week because of cash shortage and the need to prioritize government bond payments.

“We won’t get paid on time, but at least we will get our child tax credit check,” said an employee at the Legislature yesterday.

Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos said yesterday that child tax credit checks will be out today.

The processing of child tax credit checks was not completed yesterday, so checks were not mailed out. The administration said the first and largest batch of checks will be released no later than Friday.

He said as of yesterday, critical and federal funded employees will be paid this week.

“Non-critical still planned for next week. The bond payment made a dent on normal cash flow,” he said.

The government needs some $4 million to cover each payroll.

Many residents checked their mailboxes yesterday to see whether their child tax credit checks came in. Some said they will check again today.

Inos said the little over 3,000 in child tax credit checks total some $4.6 million. Some 500 more child tax credit certification application was submitted to the U.S. Treasury.

The federal child tax credit is available to taxpayers who have a child under the age of 17. It is worth up to $1,000 per “qualifying” child.
