17 pairs win debuts in Shirley’s Classic

Seventeen pairs got off to a good start in the 2011 Shirley’s Badminton Classic, winning their debut games over the weekend at the TSL Sports Complex.
Leading the list is Andrew Galvez and Angie Ito who teamed up in beating Ferdie Arago and Lanie Bartolome in the mixed doubles AA division, 21-17, 13-21, 21-16.
In the mixed lower A, six pairs played over the weekend with the duo of Malou Malasarte and Robert Reyes recording twin wins to take the early lead in the group. Reyes and Malasarte downed Macoi Aguda and Lot Abuel, 21-17, 11-21, 21-19, and Marylyn Montano and Roger Vales, 21-18, 17-21, 21-16.
Other winners in the opening week of the mixed lower A were Gary Bandoja and Hannah Choi, and Galvez and Merlie Tolentino. Bandoja and Choi swept Montano and Vales, 21-10, 21-13, and Galvez and Tolentino downed and Hapi Gabriel and Jaja Samonte, 21-13, 21-11.
In the mixed doubles 40-and-above, which is divided into two pools, five teams recorded wins at the start of the competition. Pool A winners include the duos of Lito Mendoza and Anna Alvarez and Jojo Savellano and Juneh Padua. The two pairs both defeated Puy Macario and Annette Ta. In Pool B, Mario Diola and Hannah Choi, Vales and Babes Cielo, and Vic Regis and Annarose Omori prevailed in their respective matches. Diola and Choi outclassed Saul Gargalo and Marlene Peraja, 21-19, 17-21, 21-19; Vales and Cielo triumphed over Alvin Alvarez and Emily Vargas, 21-18, 21-14; and Reyes and Omori edged Jerry Tan and Loyda Ito, 21-14, 11-21, 21-9.
The mixed doubles BB also has two group with Pool A having six teams and Pool B drawing nine. Pool A matches saw the pair of Glen Bultjenss and Wendy Fernandez and Gargallo and Annette Quiambao topping Cristy Villaflor and Kanata Omori, 21-19, 21-10, and Tan and Shirley Kim, 24-22, 19-21, 21-17, respectively.
Two matches were also played in Pool B with Joseph Santos and Elma Labuson winning over Samonte and Aries Cordero, 21-17, 19-21, 21-12, and Diola and Julie Lee thumping Eric Pena and Cielo,12-21, 21-17, 21-17.
In the mixed doubles BB division, Luis Camacho and Elna Curate and Roma Barlao and her partner triumphed in their first match in Pool A. Also making it to the win column in the mixed doubles BB were Pool B’s Joe Ortega and Kim Boranah and Jerome Malasarte and Chris Obaldo.
