A west to northwest swell generated by Tropical Storm Talas is resulting in hazardous surf on Tinian and Saipan that is expected to remain until early Friday morning, according to the CNMI Emergency Management Office.

In a marine advisory issued yesterday afternoon, EMO is strongly advising the public to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along north and west facing reefs as rip currents are life threatening. Mariners, and boaters were also urged to avoid navigating in these conditions.

“If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution especially when entering or leaving harbors and inlets and near reef lines. Wear flotation gear. Also, avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches,” the advisory states.

Hazardous surf of 10 to 12 feet on north and west facing reefs was expected to prevail through Wednesday, then slowly decline but remain hazardous through Friday.

The high surf advisory remains in effect until 6am Friday.
