HPO to announce 3 vacancies
The Historic Preservation Office under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs is set to announce three vacancies that need to be filled by qualified individuals.
Established under Public Law 3-39, HPO aims to ensure the identification and protection of significant archaeological, historic, and cultural resources in the Commonwealth; educate the public about local history, archaeology, culture and historic preservation; and develop historic and cultural properties.
DCCA Secretary Melvin Faisao said there is a recently vacated and federally funded staff position on Tinian, which is already being processed for announcement.
The position for historian, meanwhile, remains pending due to insufficient local funds, according to Faisao.
“This [full-time employee] remains at the fate of the ongoing appropriation legislation if the current Legislature will fund [the position] by October 2011,” said the secretary.
While the position of archaeologist remains unfilled, DCCA has obtained permission from its grantor office to enter into a contract with a private archaeologist in Guam, Faisao said. DCCA has contracted Victorino April to assist the agency with identified or newly discovered historic properties.
Additionally, Faisao said that April will assist in appropriate identification efforts on historic properties, review of background information, and conduct further studies if necessary.
“Once the announced position is filled, the contract [with April] will cease,” said Faisao.
