Team Cucina is Queen of the Grill competition winner
Team Cucina emerged as the winning group in the 2011 Queen of the Grill competition held Thursday night at the Garapan Street Market.
The team, composed of pals Charon De Lara, Roderick Lopez, and Lino Tenorio, bested three other groups with their entry called Barbecue Rib Eye Steak cooked in homemade sauce.
Competing groups were provided Certified Angus Beef products that they used for their recipes. Two judges evaluated all entries based on taste, tenderness, and presentation.
Team Cucina won $300 as well as goodies and gift certificates from Western Sales & Trading, Rota Water, Alpex Saipan, and Hyatt Regency Saipan.
De Lara said it was their first time to join a contest. “I’m happy we won. It was unexpected.”
Lopez, who works as a cook at Guma Taga, said their winning recipe was a fusion of Western and local flavors. “We’re really very happy. We will divide the prize money and share the gift prizes in our victory celebration,” he added.
A boat captain by profession, Tenorio said it was an honor winning a contest in their first attempt to compete as a group.
“We put a lot of special nights together and it was all worth it,” he told Saipan Tribune. “We thank all the sponsors and the entire community for their support.”
Major sponsors for the 2011 Queen of the Grill are Triple J Five Star Wholesale Foods, Kikkoman Alpex, KKMP 92.1 FM, and Marianas Variety. Other sponsors include Western Sales & Trading, Rota Mineral Water, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Taro Leaf, and Triple J Super Fresh Market.
