Commonwealth Cancer Association volunteers who recently graduated will conduct their first breast and cervical health outreach next month.

Tina Sablan, CCA program manager, said the event is slated for Sept. 3 from 6am to 11am at the Sabalu Market grounds in Susupe.

“CCA breast and cervical health outreach volunteers, many of whom are also nurses, will be there in partnership with the Department of Public Health to provide free health screenings (blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index), health education, and referrals for breast and/or cervical screenings or other services,” she said.

A total of 30 volunteers graduated on Aug. 13 from the breast and cervical health outreach training program, the first to be organized by CCA.

The six-week program covered Cancer 101; Basics of Breast & Cervical Health; Nutrition, Physical Activity, &BMI; Navigating Resources and the Comprehensive Cancer Control Program; the Breast & Cervical Screening Program; Patient Privacy Rights; Health & Wellness as a Lifestyle; Outreach Strategies & Communication Skills; and Survivorship.

The training program was funded through grants from the Pacific Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities at the University of Hawaii and the TakeCare Foundation.

“In addition to the training sessions, volunteers brainstormed and began developing a year-long outreach plan that will include materials and activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, breast and cervical health awareness, and screenings for breast and cervical cancer,” said Sablan.

Sablan told Saipan Tribune that the volunteers are already working with Glimpses, the marketing agency contracted to develop the outreach materials.

“Glimpses has been working with the volunteers to identify the types of materials they want to use, the types of incentives that they want to give out that would be tied in with their message. They will be using that over the course of their activities throughout the year,” added Sablan.
