Johnny Aldan, a nursing instructor at the Northern Marianas College, was elected president of the American Pacific Nursing Leaders Council during the organization’s 33rd annual conference in Chuuk.

Aldan will serve as the organization’s leader for the next two years and will lead next year’s conference in Kosrae.

The council is an organization established over 30 years ago with the goal of promoting communication, collaboration and capacity-building among nursing and midwifery leaders of Pacific Island countries formerly or currently associated with the U.S. government.

“We are very proud of Johnny being elected president of the APNLC. We look forward to the contributions he will make to improve and advance nursing leadership in the American Pacific,” said NMC nursing director Rosa M. Tudela.

Aldan and fellow NMC nursing instructor John W. Cox attended the conference earlier this year, and met with many nursing leaders from various islands to discuss key issues related to nursing care for the people in the American Pacific. This year’s conference theme was “Nurses Navigating Forward.”

“As president I hope to establish a scholarship program in the Council that will help at least one student per jurisdiction pursue a nursing degree at a U.S. accredited institution. Also, I hope to create a task force within the council and each jurisdiction in order to work more closely with the World Health Organization to combat the non-communicable diseases problem,” said Aldan yesterday.

Aldan was previously elected president of the APNLC in 1995 and 1999. Aldan has been an instructor at the NMC nursing department for three years. Prior to this, he worked as a nurse at the Commonwealth Health Center for almost 30 years. Participation in the APNLC conference was made possible through funding from the CNMI Area Health Education Center at NMC.
