WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Department of the Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, Tony Babauta, approved a $500,000 grant requested by the Government of Guam to purchase new ambulances for the Guam Fire Department’s fleet. The one half million dollar grant is sufficient to purchase four new ambulances, maintenance packages for each ambulance, along with the acquisition of two new replacement engines for existing but non-operational ambulances in GFD’s fleet.

“The difficulties associated with keeping government fleet vehicles operational is familiar to every insular area. Over the years, fortunately, DOI has been able to provide funding to supplement each government’s efforts to ensure an adequate number of emergency vehicles exist to meet the demands of the islands’ community,” said Babauta. “We hope to be able to continue this type of support to each island, but we are also encouraging leaders to fund and enact strong maintenance programs to keep essential vehicles on the roads. I commend Guam’s leadership for bringing this issue to the forefront and for making this important safety issue a priority.” (DOI)
