The Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture will not be able to sponsor the airfare of local artists who want to participate in the 24th Guam Micronesia Island Fair in October.

“We don’t have any funding for the event,” executive director Angel S. Hocog said. “What we can do is help those interested artists through coordination with the Guam Visitors Bureau, just like last year.”

The Guam Micronesia Island Fair is the annual signature cultural event in Guam coordinated by the Guam Visitors Bureau that showcases and celebrates the vibrant cultures of Micronesia.

The 24th Guam Micronesia Island Fair is slated for Oct. 14 to 16 at the Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park at Ypao Beach, located on Pale San Vitores Road in Tumon, Guam.

While participating artists from the CNMI will have to pay for their own airfare, Hocog said the Arts Council will coordinate with GVB, which will take care of the artists’ hotel accommodations, meals, and ground transportation.

“It’s sad that we’re not able to fully support the artists by subsidizing their trip to Guam for this event, the way we did in previous years,” he told Saipan Tribune. “But we do encourage them to take part in this event if they can manage to pay for it because it’s a good opportunity for them.”

Hocog noted that the Guam Micronesia Island Fair will give CNMI artists more exposure since the event draws thousands of spectators each year. Last year’s event alone saw about 20,000 local and off-island visitors.

“There’s more opportunity there because more people participate in the Guam Micronesia Island Fair. The event will definitely help promote our artists’ works of art,” he added.

Hocog urged interested artists to register with the Arts Council if they want to take part in the event. Deadline for registration is on Sept. 20.
