The Saipan Mayor’s Office will begin distributing on Monday application forms for students who want to participate in the 2011 KSKK Student Cultural Exchange Program trip to Japan.

Executive secretary Vinycia Seman said that only 10 slots will be available for the program slated for Oct. 6 to 12.

The KSKK Student Cultural Exchange Program has been going on for over 20 years. The last KSKK group from Japan visited Saipan in July.

“The program is important as it brings awareness to what is going on in another country and promotes mutual understanding of one’s culture and way of life. It develops lifelong friendships with a family in Japan, especially now with technology providing an easier way of keeping in touch,” Seman told Saipan Tribune.

Slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and acceptance to the program will be based on meeting qualifications and payment of ticket. The program is open to students between third and eighth grades. Interested participants must possess a valid U.S. passport that does not expire within six months while in Japan, willing to pay a non-refundable ticket fare of $546.06 by Sept. 16, purchase travel insurance, and present a student clearance form filled out and approved by teachers and counselor.

Seman encouraged qualified students to apply for the program. “I am certain our students will come back with memorable experiences to be grateful about,” she added.
