Office on Aging director Rose Mondala said the creation of the CNMI Office of Transit Authority is welcome news for all senior citizens in the Commonwealth.

“With this office, some of our man’amko will be able to avail of public transportation because it will have a schedule and go from village to village,” she told Saipan Tribune.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial established last week the CNMI Office of Transit Authority as mandated by Public Law 17-43, which he signed in May.

He appointed Thomas J. Camacho as the first special assistant for public transportation in charge of the new office within the Office of the Governor.

Mondala, who also serves in the Council for Developmental Disabilities board, said the man’amko at the Aging Center will no longer need to drive their cars or be picked up by their service vehicles once a viable public transportation system is in place.

“I’m really pleased. This will take some of the pressure off from our office,” she said.

The new office will also be a good thing for the rest of the public, according to Mondala. “Those who don’t own cars don’t have to worry because they will still be able to reach their destination.”
