Public School System administrators—principals and vice principals—are mum on the resignation of former Marianas High school principal Craig Garrison and his subsequent attempt to rescind that resignation.

Jonas Barcinas, the principals’ representative for secondary schools, told Saipan Tribune yesterday that the issue about Garrison has never been brought to the table for discussion so the group has no position on the matter.

Secondary schools have about 18 school leaders. PSS named Cherlyn Cabrera as acting principal of MHS, replacing Garrison.

Barcinas described the issue about Garrison as purely “personal” and “administrative” in nature.

“That issue is beyond our control and it has never been brought to the table for discussion. Nobody from the secondary group [of administrators] has tried to talk about it during our regular meetings because we believe that that is purely personal and administrative in nature,” Barcinas said yesterday.

Barcinas is a member of the PSS leadership team who met with Education Commissioner Rita Sablan yesterday on Capital Hill.

The principal of Hopwood Junior High School said they are focused on the upcoming opening of classes on Sept. 5.

“We have no comment to make on Mr. Garrison’s issue. Despite his absence, we can say that principals are all ready and equipped for the opening of classes,” he said.

Administrators recently attended a two-week seminar on balanced leadership and success insights conducted by McREL.

Barcinas said that follow-up workshops are conducted by experts every summer, to ensure that administrators are prepared. New approaches, teaching techniques, and methodologies are among the highlights of these workshops, he said.

Meantime, Barcinas announced yesterday that Hopwood Junior High School was recently approved a six-year accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges—a first for the school. Hopwood is the largest middle school on island and has over 1,000 enrollees each year.
