UOG’s TRIO Educational Talent Search gets $1.6M

[B]MANGILAO, Guam[/B]—The University of Guam’s TRIO Programs was awarded $1.6 million to continue its Educational Talent Search Program, which aims to serve 738 middle and high school students on Guam.
According to Yoichi K. Rengiil, UOG TRIO Programs director, the U.S. Department of Education has approved its grant application for the next five years. The annual grant award will be in the amount of $338,330 and will serve George Washington High School, John F. Kennedy High School, Okkodo High School, Simon Sanchez High School, Southern High School and Vicente Benavente Middle School.
Revisions in the new federal TRIO regulations based on the U.S. Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 led to program changes that required greater emphasis in high school age appropriate services.
“Unfortunately we were not able to include all the public middle schools in this grant application,” said Rengiil.
Schools in Chuuk that were an extension of the program since 1995 will also cease services and operation on Aug. 31, 2011.
The new grant cycle will commence on Sept. 1, 2011, and aims to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education.[B][I] (UOG)[/I][/B]
