The Board of Education has extended the existence of an ad hoc committee it created to come up with the tools that will be used to evaluate the education commissioner.

From July 31 deadline set for the committee to complete its task, the board decided to extend the panel’s life by five more months or until Dec. 31, 2011, according to board member Herman T. Guerrero.

The decision was made during its special meeting last Wednesday.

“The committee is in the process of finishing the task on coming up with a recommendation on the process of conducting a COE evaluation. It is extended until Dec. 31, 2011,” Guerrero said in an email to the Saipan Tribune.

The board created the ad hoc committee in May to come up with the assessment tools for the upcoming evaluation of Education Commissioner Dr. Rita A. Sablan. The three-member panel is chaired by board member Galvin Deleon Guerrero, assisted by committee members Lucy Blanco-Maratita and Denise Tanya King.

The purpose of the ad hoc committee is to research, review and make recommendations on the evaluation tools that will be used in evaluating the education commissioner and Board of Education staff and members.

Sablan has been serving the school system for more than 25 years. She became the education commissioner in August 2008, replacing Dr. David Borja. Her contract is subject to evaluation every year. She serves at the pleasure of the board, which is her employer.
