Manglona holds first hearing as federal court’s chief judge
Chief Judge Ramona Villagomez Manglona conducted yesterday her first hearing at the U.S. District Court for the NMI.
Manglona’s first proceeding was the arraignment of Dongjun Li, a Chinese national who was indicted for allegedly trying to check-in for an outbound flight to Los Angeles, California, via Narita, Japan, using fake documents.
Li pleaded not guilty to the indictment that charged him with immigration fraud and false statement or entry.
Manglona set the jury trial for Oct. 3, 2011, at 9am and ordered that pretrial motions be filed no later than Sept. 1, 2011.
The judge allowed defense attorney Mark Scoggins to file a motion to dismiss by Aug. 18, 2011. She gave the U.S. government until Aug. 25, 2011, to file the response to the motion.
Manglona said the hearing on the motion to dismiss will be held on Sept. 1, 2011, at 10:30am.
Li was remanded back to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
After the hearing, assistant U.S. attorney Beverly McCallum told Manglona, “Welcome to the district court.” The judge smiled but did not reply.
Scoggins also stood up and welcomed the new chief judge to the district court.
