House resolution honors outgoing Rota principal

A resolution recognizing and honoring the numerous contributions of the outgoing principal of Dr. Rita Inos Hocog Junior High School was prefiled yesterday in the House of Representatives.

After several years of service on Rota, Maria S. Quitugua will be moving to the Public School System’s central office as its assessment program coordinator beginning this new school year. She is expected to relocate on Saipan to perform this duty.

Quitugua has been employed at the Rota Junior High School since 2002. She attended Northern Marianas College where she obtained an associate degree in both liberal arts and early childhood. She went on to the University of Guam where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, graduating magna cum laude in her class. Quitugua completed her master’s certification courses in education supervision and administration at the University of Guam and master’s in school program evaluation from the University of Hawaii.

Saipan Tribune learned that Quitugua’s vast work experience dates back to 1993 when she first joined the Rota Head Start Center and Early Childhood Education program for six years. She then became a classroom teacher at Koblerville Elementary School on Saipan from 1999 through 2000. She has also worked as a census enumerator for the Commerce Department and for the Adult Basic Education Program at NMC.

In 2002, Quitugua moved back to Rota to serve at the Rota Junior High School as its language arts teacher and was later promoted to principal. Throughout her career as an educator, Quitugua continued to avail and keep herself apprised with updates through numerous workshops and trainings here and off-island. She also volunteered her time and services to the community in various capacities.

The resolution states that it is just proper to recognize and honor Quitugua as she takes pride in her responsibilities and accomplishments and undertakes any additional duties and responsibilities without complaint and with a positive attitude, exemplifying her dedication and commitment to education.
