Mr. Keiper’s folly

The letter that appeared yesterday by Franklin Keiper of Arizona was entirely misleading. I don’t usually respond to such letters, but this one begs a short response.

First, the newly elected President of Brazil, Dilma Rouseff, was a former Marxist guerilla. She is not currently classified as a “communist” nor did she run on a communist ticket. She served with former two-term President Luiz Inacio Lula DA Silva who was barred from running for a third term (just as U.S. Presidents are), but who left with the highest approval rating in history—over 80 percent.

As to your “spending” figures: You are totally mistaken. George Bush’s yearly expenditure (budget) in his last year was $3.1 trillion. Obama’s budget in this last year was $3.97 trillion. The budget was actually implemented by Congress, not the President. The per day spending level of the current government is slightly less than $20 billion—not the $4.5 trillion you stated. Under Bush, it was $15.5 billion, not the $1.2 trillion you stated.

As to which newscast to watch? Independent rating specialists say you should watch a variety of them—but Fox News has been consistently rated as the single most prejudiced and one-sided news of them all. Perhaps this is where you are coming from.
