Hocog tops RGA August Ace qualifier
Carl Hocog moved closer to winning the Refaluwasch Golf Association August Ace after ruling a qualifying tournament last Sunday at the Marianas Country Club.
The 12-handicaper Hocog tamed the Marpi course with his 38 and 43 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a gross 81 and net 69. If his net 69 is unbeaten in the August tournament later this month, he gets to keep the monthly Ace and qualify for the RGA Club Championship.
Hocog prevailed over 11 other RGA members, winning by five strokes against new member Eric Lizama. Lizama had a 50 on the front and 48 on the back for a gross 98 and deducting his 24 handicap, he ended up with a net 74. Completing the Top 3 was Tars Olopai, who carded a net 76. The 5-handicapper Olopai shot a 40 and 41 on the front and back nines for a gross 81 and defeated Joe Demapan in the scorecard tiebreak in the first nine holes.
Olopai had a net 37.5 on the front nine against Demapan’s 39.5. The 11-handicapper Demapan logged a 45 on the front an 42 on the back for a gross 87 in his debut with RGA.
Other club members who joined the August Ace qualifier with their net scores in parenthesis were Ulysis Kapileo (79), Asterio Tawanpiy (79), Tony Rogolifoi (83), Ray Tigilau (82), Tom Tebuteb (85), Joe Saures (79), Dwaine Stephens (82), and Manny Mangarero (81).
Tigilau won the closest to the pin contest on hole No. 6, while Olopai had the same feat on No. 12.
Meanwhile, RGA is encouraging its members to join this weekend’s Tournament of Champions.
The club is also reminding monthly winners to compete in at least six RGA events to qualify for the club championship in December.
RGA is still accepting members at $25 annually. For more information about RGA tournaments, contact Olopai at 483-5508, Rogolifoi at 288-3515, and Jess Wabol at 288-1129.
