Visiting Spanish historian Dr. Carlos Madrid will make a presentation on local history tonight, Aug. 2, 2011, at the Visitors Center Theater, American Memorial Park beginning at 6pm.

Madrid’s presentation “Islas Marianas Digital Archive,” will highlight his work to locate and digitize thousands of pages of Spanish government records relating to the Mariana Islands and explain how they may be used to interpret local history.

Among the documents that Madrid will discuss are those relating to the settlement of Tanapag Village in 1888. He will also explain how these old government documents may be used to explore genealogies and family histories.

Madrid’s research is a part of the NMI Council for the Humanities’ Digital Archive Initiative, which supports projects to locate and digitize primary source documents relating to the history of the Mariana Islands.

The presentation is open to the public and free of charge. Contact Council staff at 235-4785 or visit its website at www.nmihumanities.org for more details.
