The Senate confirmed yesterday former senator Manuel P. Villagomez’s nomination to the Commonwealth Ports Authority’s board of directors.

Villagomez, who will represent Tinian, brings to six the number of directors at the CPA board. He joins chair Jose Lifoifoi (Saipan), Margaret Prater (Saipan), Benigno Sablan (Saipan), Fermin Sakisat (Saipan), and Barrie Toves (Rota) on the board.

“It’s a challenge to become a part of the CPA board with these economic problems in the CNMI. We really have to work hard,” said Villagomez moments after his Senate confirmation.

One of the major projects he is looking at is finding funding for Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. “We’re anticipating federal grants from the [Federal Aviation Administration].”

Villagomez said that Tinian needs a new Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting unit and the airport’s departure and arrival terminals need to be renovated. “We’re looking at that project and it would soon be bid out.”

He said direct flights from China to Tinian is also a possibility with CPA, Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino, the Tinian Legislative Delegation, and the Tinian Mayor Office all negotiating with Sichuan Airlines.
