Nine teams have already confirmed their participation to the 20th Annual Rotary Club Youth Basketball League tentatively scheduled to kick off on Aug. 5.

The list includes the defending champions Ol’Aces, runners-up Sonics, GBR Rollers, San Antonio Sixers, Proa, Rollers Basketball Club CK Blazers, RBC Susupe, Tinian, and Susupe Hi-5.

Three more teams—Kagman, As Matuis and Tanapag— have shown their interests in the youth league, but have yet to commit in the competition.

The Ol’Aces took last year’s U19 championship after slipping past pennant champions Sonics, 65-64. The Sonics routed the G-Stars, 81-63, in the first semis game to set up a final showdown against the Ol’Aces, who eked out a 60-57 victory over the Kagman Sparks in the other semis duel.

Meanwhile, a mandatory 5:30pm meeting for participating team managers and coaches is set for Monday at the Gararapan Community Development Center behind the basketball court.

Important topics to be discussed include the league opening date and venue; ground rules; age requirements; team colors and uniforms; coaching, referee, and table official courses; the possibility of playing some games on Tinian; formation of a coaches association; a proposed 2011-2012 calendar of events; and tentative opening dates for (boys and girls) U16 and U13 divisions.

The Rotary caging is organized by the Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands and is considered by many as the CNMI’s premier youth basketball competition.
