Close to 500 students may be found eligible to receive financial aid from the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance for the fall 200 semester, according to administrator Henry Hofschneider.

The deadline for applications was on July 1. SHEFA received 712 applicants, including online and mailed applications.

Based on a preliminary review of applicants, Hofschneider said that many had incomplete documents and records in their application packet. These were initially rejected for failing to meet SHEFA requirements.

“Because we’re seeing a significant reduction of eligible scholars this new semester, there’s a possibility that we may not need to enforce a new cut in the financial awards for the new semester,” Hofschneider told Saipan Tribune.

Today, Hofschneider is expected to present to the board the latest data and recommendations for board action.

Last spring semester, SHEFA had 630 applicants—a significant decrease from the fall 2010 semester, which had over 900.
