In response to Vicente M. Sablan’s letter dated July 27, 2011, in the Saipan Tribune, I want to make clear some points to his reference. Yes, at one point 700,000 tourists came to the islands. Today, how many tourists coming to the islands now are gamblers? Not all tourists are gamblers. Most tourists, if not all, are here on vacation. For the third time, I mentioned that if they are on vacation with their children then that’s where a shopping mall is more viable. It’s family-oriented and also it’s good for our local population alike. It will once again boost hotel occupancy. Dive shops and tour agencies will thrive again.

Remember that our tourists are here for different types of fun activities. They are not here to see an island that looks like Tokyo. It’s the reason why they chose Saipan as a their vacation destination. If we have a casino on Saipan, who in their right mind will spend a few more dollars to fly to Tinian, moreover to Rota? Tinian and Rota are in bad state now and I think it’s prudent that they should be prioritized. It’s enough that the poker parlors are destroying families.
