The public is invited to a presentation by Spanish historian and author Carlos Madrid, who will share some highlights related to the Council’s Spanish documents project.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at 6pm at the American Memorial Park Visitors Center Theatre.

During the colonial rule of the Mariana Islands from 1565 to 1898, Spanish officials regularly reported on the daily life on the islands, and many of these reports are currently stored at the National Archives of the Philippines in Manila.

A We the People grant awarded to the NMI Humanities Council funded the research, indexing, and digitization of over 30,000 pages of these documents. Madrid was the project director for this Council program.

He has researched and written extensively on Spanish rule in the Marianas, and his book, Beyond Distances: Governance, Politics and Deportation in the Mariana Islands from 1870 to 1877, can be purchased at the Council office.
