The Commonwealth Ports Authority board has approved the renovation of all restrooms at the Francisco C. Ada-Saipan International Airport.

From the initial plan of renovating just 13 restrooms, the board decided to expand the renovation work to all restrooms in the entire airport on Saipan.

CPA executive director Edward Deleon Guerrero said that funding for the project will come from the Federal Aviation Administration’s airport improvement project program and a portion from the agency’s local revenue.

“This project has been on our books for a long time and we need to move it forward. Funding has already been identified and we’re thanking the board for making this project among its priorities,” Deleon Guerrero said.

Besides the restroom improvements, the work will also include upgrading the airport’s water pumps.

A new request-for-proposal will be announced soon, he said.

The board has also approved two change orders in the ongoing rehabilitation of the Saipan airport’s main runway 7/25.

The Saipan International Airport’s runway rehabilitation project has recorded overall cost of over $19 million to date, fully funded by the FAA.

The contractor for the project is Guam Pacific Power Corp. Inc. It is expected to be completed in October this year.

Deleon Guerrero said construction work at the runway is in full swing. The project has three phases and the construction schedule has been expanded to expedite completion.

The rehabilitation includes milling the existing runway, taxiway, blast pad and shoulder pavements, asphalt concrete overlay and other works. During the construction period, the main runway would still accommodate large aircrafts as construction will be closed during their flight schedules. For smaller aircraft, the newly built taxiway will accommodate them.

CPA earlier identified several airport initiatives that it wants FAA to fund. Among these projects are the airport master plan for the three islands and the procurement of additional vehicles for CPA’s ARFF department.
