Sakudi bats for more teams in women’s league
After ruling the women’s division of the Chamonilian Softball Association’s 2nd Annual Budweiser Slow-Pitch Softball League, Sakudi hopes for more competition next season.
“We would like to see the women’s division expand next season, but we have to coordinate that through league officials. They reserved 15 slots for men’s and just five for the women this past season, so hopefully we can work something out for next year,” Sakudi team manager Ed Mendiola said.
Mendiola added many softball leagues tried utilizing a co-ed format, but because of the significant talent gap between the men and women, only a select few women players were able to legitimately compete.
Sakudi clinched the women’s championship after a 28-3 demolition of Check It Out in the finals. Overall, they won nine games and lost only one (against Enamo Meta) last season to claim the pennant, too.
“We had a few close games and even lost one, but those outcomes resulted more from an off day as our sticks just didn’t show up. Those things happen,” Mendiola added.
Sakudi, which translates into spank or whip, is stocked with heavy hitters in its lineup and routinely runs aggressively in the base paths. The team is composed of Finals MVP Bert Camacho, Liz Lebria, Rachel Salalila, Erlinda Naputi, Pauline Camacho, Popo Tudela, Lillian Aguon, Thelma Mizer, Tani Masga, Jenny Palacios, Lenise Kapileo, Tiana Muna, Liz Palacios-Olouachel, Eileen Babauta, Juanette Atalig, Bego Camacho, Shirley Taitano, and Geraldine Songao.
Through early observation, Sakudi showed little signs of weakness in the field and really looked like an all-star team since the start of the league
Sakudi mostly made up of former Mix-A-Lot players who dominated the Saipan Softball Association-Women’s Island-wide Slow-Pitch Softball League for several years.
“Other teams have young players with a lot of talent, but our team has more chemistry. If a young group of girls can find the right mix, then I think we may have a vigorous challenge next season,” Mendiola said.
